Research Interests

I am interested mainly by broad scale patterns and processes in the natural world. Much of my work has been on the earth system of the Quaternary, especially the carbon cycle. I am also interested in the biogeography of invasive species, and latitudinal patterns in diversity, plant defenses and in insect coloration patterns. (See more details in my personal web page)

Current projects are:

  • The comparative ecology of the invasive Norway maple (Acer platanoides) in Europe and North America .
  • Simulation of dust-climate-vegetation feedbacks during the late Quaternary (with Charlie Zender of U C Irvine).
  • Latitudinal gradients in plant defensive chemistry in eastern North America (with Claus Holzapfel of Rutgers ).
  • Latitudinal gradients in insect colourfulness (with Frank Shih, NJIT).
