The labs for General Biology are held in the Biology Learning Center located in Boyden Hall 220. All of our labs are self-paced to allow students flexibility. They are designed to take about 4 hours, but some students prefer to work faster, while others like to take their time. Every two weeks you will do a new lab in the BLC. You will have one week to complete each lab. (In the weeks that you are not doing a lab you will participate in a discussion class.) Please try to start your labs early in the week so that you will have enough time to complete it.
Discussion classes (sections 1-38) are in Boyden Hall 223. These discussions cover new topics exploring the latest developments in science. Schedules for lab and discussion will vary, alternating for students registered in even numbered discussion classes vs. students in odd numbered discussion classes.
The first time you come into the Biology Learning Center for lab, you will need your:
- At the Entrance Desk fill out an Admit Slip and exchange it, with your ID and Specimen Card for a Carrel Assignment Card.
- Go to your assigned carrel and follow the instructions in the manual. Any changes will either be given in a handout at the Entrance Desk or written on the blackboards in the BLC. If you have any questions, call over one of the instructors in the BLC, they are there to help you.
- You are responsible for all materials and equipment in your assigned carrel! Please report any broken or missing supplies immediately to the BLC office. DO NOT MOVE EQUIPMENT OUT OF ANOTHER CARREL OR CHANGE YOUR CARREL WITHOUT REPORTING TO THE ENTRANCE DESK.
- When you have finished your lab, obtain a Check-out Pass from one of the instructors monitoring the Learning Center; this indicates that you have left your carrel in order.
- At the Entrance Desk pick up your ID and Specimen Card and return:
- the carrel assignment card
- the check-out pass
- There is no smoking in the BLC.
- In addition, food and drinks are not permitted anywhere in the Learning Center Complex.
- PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES UNATTENDED!!!
Looking forward to seeing you in the lab.
Ellen Belisle, BLC Supervisor
